In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the North Shore Chamber of Commerce hosted an important panel discussion on the critical role employers play in supporting employees impacted by domestic violence and creating safer, more informed workplaces.
Moderated by David Thomson, Executive Director of Employers Against Domestic Violence, the panel featured Julie DeCosta, Senior HR Professional; Alexandra Deal, Employment Attorney; and Sara Stanley, Executive Director of HAWC.
Panelists discussed how domestic violence—defined as behaviors or tactics used to establish power and control over another person—can affect the workplace, including employee attendance, schedules, and overall well-being. They emphasized the importance of recognizing potential signs of violence, maintaining confidentiality, and prioritizing employee safety.
A particularly meaningful moment was hearing from a survivor who shared her personal story and the tremendous impact employment had on her healing journey. Her experience highlighted how a supportive workplace can provide stability, independence, and a path forward.
The discussion reinforced that employers have an important role in fostering safe, supportive workplaces where employees can access understanding and resources when they need them most.
Thank you to our moderator, panelists, and survivor speaker for sharing their expertise and experiences with our business community.
