When writing to elected officials...
Here are several suggestions to keep in mind.
When writing to your governor, senators or representatives, remember to include four essential points . . .
- First, make specific reference to the specific bill in question (such as H.100 for a House bill, or S.200 for a Senate bill).
- Secondly, include a brief explanation of reason for the effect the bill will have on you and your community.
- Thirdly, clearly state your recommendation to your legislator. Do you want him or her to favor or oppose the bill?
- Finally, it is important to not make any threats or promises to the representative you are writing. Remember that they are in a position to
not be pressured into voting. Instead, it is the responsibility of the representative to enact the proper legislation based on their ability to
exercise their best judgement.
Addressing Your Letter. . .
- The governor is addressed as His/Her Excellency John J. Doe.
- A state senator, a United States senator, a congressman/woman is addressed as Honorable John J. Doe.
- A state representative is addressed as Representative John J. Doe.
- The salutations are: Dear Governor Doe; Dear Senator Doe; Dear Congressman/woman Doe; and Dear Representative Doe.
